Synopsis: Two college students are headed for spring break when they end up in a life and death struggle against John Ryder.

Review: This remake of the 1986 Rutger Hauer vehicle, this time with Sean Bean as John Ryder, the Hitcher, was your pretty standard horror suspense type thriller. It starts off like any other road movie with the happy couple heading off for spring break and quickly jumps into thriller mode on a dark and rainy New Mexico highway.

Unfortunately, every jump worthy moment of the movie has been given away in the trailer and advertisements for the film. So, if you’ve seen the trailer, you have already seen this movie. Only one moment, not totally given away in the trailer, may make you squirm, but more for the glimpse of grotesqueness than because it is actually scary.

We did learn a few things about what to do on a road trip:

  • Obviously, never pick up strangers.
  • When stalked by a psychotic madman always stop and make out with your girlfriend in the shower.
  • Lastly, don’t leave said girlfriend to go find a payphone.

If you like these types of movies you may find it more entertaining than I did. As for how it compares to the original, I don’t know, as I have not seen it. Overall, The Hitcher was a paint-by-numbers horror suspense thriller with an unsatisfying ending. My recommendation is to leave this one stranded on the side of the road.

Have you seen The Hitcher? What did you think of it? Is this one better or worst than the first? Leave your review in the comments.

One is the Loneliest Number for this Movie Watcher

Why? Because The Hitcher is all alone this weekend, it is the only new movie hitting the box office this Friday. I like a good suspense thriller, not that this is one. But, when you throw in the horror aspect, it just leaves me cold. I have never been a big fan of the horror movie genre. Unfortunately, the only new movie I can hitch a review ride with this week is The Hitcher. Which is a horror suspense thriller.

So, to recap:

  • I don’t particularly like horror movies.
  • A horror type movie is the only thing coming out this week.
  • I am going to see The Hitcher for the third new movie Friday of the year.

I am sure the suspense of what movie I would see this Friday was just unbearable after reading yesterday’s post. But, now you are thrilled to know what I am going to see and why I am going to see it. Come back tomorrow and see if it was horrific or worth thumbing a ride down to your local movie house.

Will you be taking in The Hitcher this weekend?

Seems To Be a Little Hitcher in My Giddyup

Usually on a Friday there are like three to five movies to choose from that are new. During January these are usually not the greatest of flicks to hit theaters but I started this new website with the idea of seeing a new movie on Fridays. Then this Friday comes and there is only one new movie to hit my local cinemaplex, The Hitcher, a horror suspense flick. This would be one of the last movies I would ever choose to go see at the theater let alone anywhere else. Yet, I set up my rules and now I have to live by them.

New Movie Opening January 19th:

Movie: The Hitcher (R)
Starring: Sean Bean and Sophia Bush
Genre: Horror Suspense Thriller
Synopsis: Update of The Hitcher. Two college students are headed for spring break when they end up in a life and death struggle against John Ryder.
First Thoughts: Do we really need another update of a horror movie that is only 20 years old? Not my usual movie choice.

There are a few movies that are opening wider this week but The Hitcher is the only one that is new at a theater near me. So, I guess that will make my viewing choice pretty easy. Are you going to see this movie? If so, what is the attraction?

Movie Review: Stomp the Yard

Movie: Stomp the Yard (PG-13)
Released: January 12th, 2007
Runtime: 1 hr. 55 min.
Ticket Price: $5.00 Early Matinee
Refreshments: Rolo
Starring: Columbus Short, Meagan Good and Chris Brown
Director: Sylvain White

Rating: Worth an Early Matinee

Synopsis: A talented street dancer from Los Angeles deals with the death of his brother due to tragic circumstances while attending Truth University in Atlanta. He has his eye on a pretty young woman while trying to focus on his studies. Yet, he ends up in the middle of a battle for stomp supremacy between two rival fraternities over his dance skills for an upcoming competition.

Review: While Stomp the Yard is a formulaic romance drama, it does seem a little deeper than those that have come before. My first thought was that this was Drumline, but with stepping instead of drumming. It is similar to that and other movies like You Got Served but this was a bit more developed. The historical themes, lessons in teamwork and having strong character all play a part in the story. These themes seem more the point of the movie than just all the cool dancing. The movie ends with a quote: “Intelligence plus character – that is the true goal of education.” Martin Luther King Jr.

The hero of our story is DJ, a street dancer from Los Angeles whose brother was killed after they had won a dance battle on rival turf. He is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Atlanta and given the opportunity to attend Truth University. On his first day, boy sees girl across a crowded room. Boy pursues girl. Boy finds out girl is dating a jerk. And, it only continues down the same well-stepped path that we have seen before.

It is too bad, considering the wider themes of the movie that they went with an array of stock villains. Not that they were evil people, just the characters that throw up the roadblocks and stand in the way of our hero. They didn’t deviate from the standard in any way. You have seen them before and unfortunately will be seeing them again.

The dance battles and the rhythmic stepping sequences are amazing to watch. They are why most will go see this film. While I am definitely not in the target demographic for this movie (I am assuming high school teenagers), I did enjoy it to some extent. Stomp the Yard is worth and early matinee, in my opinion, if only to check out the outstanding dance sequences on the big screen, as they won’t look or sound as good unless you have a really nice home theater system.

That is my movie review of Stomp the Yard. What did you think? Leave your Stomp the Yard review in the comments.
