What New Movies Come Out Friday, March 25th?

May 23, 2007 · Filed Under New Movies This Friday · Comment

Six new movies open this Friday. Two open wide and four are in limited release.

Movies Opening Nationwide on Friday, May 25th:

Movie: Bug (R)
Starring: Ashley Judd and Harry Connick, Jr.
Genre: Horror Thriller
Synopsis: A woman of unstable nature begins a relationship with a man of strange charisma at an old motel in the desert. She sees a flicker of hope, but then he tells her of a secret military experiment. He says he has been injected with tiny bugs that crawl beneath his skin. Paranoia and despair begins to overtake them.
First Thoughts: Sounds exactly like the kind of movie I will probably never see, although Ashley Judd’s performance is said to be quite good. I do know one thing, however, no matter what, never stay at an old rundown motel in the desert. Nothing good ever comes of it.

Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (PG-13) (Read Review)
Starring: Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp
Genre: Fantasy Comedy Adventure
Synopsis: Everything hangs in the balance as a rescue of Captain Jack Sparrow is attempted. Will and Elizabeth join with Captain Barbossa to find Jack. They have to deal with the crew of The Flying Dutchman ghost ship and an infamous Chinese pirate on this journey. Ultimately, the pirate life may come to an end.
First Thoughts: It will be the big movie of the weekend, but I can only hope that it is better than the last one. That one was barely a movie, it was more just a bunch of sequences that hopefully will make more sense once the third chapter is seen.

Movies in Limited Release this Week:

  • Angel-A – A guy thinking of suicide to escape his debts saves a woman from killing herself. She then pledges to stay with him and help him figure away out of his current circumstances.
  • The Boss of It All – The director of a company has been telling his employees that the real head of the firm is an absentee owner. When the director decides he wants to sell, the buyer will only deal with the owner. Since the owner is not real, the director hires an actor to portray him, but things go wrong and comedy ensues.
  • The Golden Door – The story of a man and his two sons with a group of others trying to make their way from Sicily to America.
  • Paprika – The anime story of a scientist who at night is a dream detective. He and others are working on a device to help people with psychiatric problems, but if it got into the wrong people’s hands, it could be used to mess with people’s brains. When the device is taken, the scientist investigates its disappearance.

As of now, it looks like only Bug and Pirates of the Caribbean are playing anywhere near me. So, that leaves two movies to choose from. What new movies will you be taking in this Memorial Day weekend?

Movie Review: Shrek the Third – Starring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas & Eddie Murphy

Synopsis: When the King of Far Far Away, Shrek’s father-in-law, suddenly passes away, it leaves Shrek as the next in line for the thrown. He doesn’t want to be King. So, he sets out to find a cousin of Fiona’s, a slacker high school student, to take the position or he could be stuck with it. Comedy ensues.

Review: Shrek the Third had some good sight gags and funny lines, plus plenty of gross-out humor to keep the younger set giggling. It has been a while since Shrek and Shrek 2 has yet to be seen, so that left the third one to be, pretty much, judged on its own merits.

The Shrek movies have quite a twisted take on many a beloved fairy tale. Some of the best moments in the film come from Snow White, the Gingerbread Man and Merlin. Sight gags like birds landing on Snow White’s arms every time she holds them out to her side. The Six Million Dollar Gingerbread Man. Merlin having been a magic teacher at the high school until his breakdown. These are all quite funny.

There just isn’t enough of them and many of the ones that are, you have already probably seen multiple times in the trailers and commercials for the movie. I guess this has been a problem for quite some time and will continue to be, but it really takes away from a movie when a scene takes place and you have already seen it too many times to count. This is the case here. Many of what could have been the best comic moments in the movie have been killed by the repetition from all the promotions for the movie.

Like most fairytales, Shrek the Third also has a moral. It attempts to teach the viewer that you should be the best you, you can be. To not let what others think or say about you get you down or change who you should become. It does a fairly good job on that account.

If you really loved the first two, then you will most likely enjoy this one too. For the most part, unless you have a gaggle of little ones, you should probably just wait for the rental.

Shrek the Third Will Be My Twenty-Third New Movie of the Year

May 17, 2007 · Filed Under What I'm Watching · Comment

There isn’t a whole lot of choice in the matter. If I am to continue down the path of watching at least one new movie each Friday, Shrek the Third is the only game in town. Nothing else is being released nationwide and all the limited release flicks are not playing anywhere near me.

This isn’t the 23rd Friday of the year, as I have seen three new movies on other days. I am on pace for about 60 new movies watched on the big screen at a theater for the year. That will be 30 times more than I saw last year. So, in that respect this has been quite a fun project.

I was hoping to rent and watch Shrek 2 this week, but didn’t get a chance. I saw the first one, but have never seen the second. Now I will be going to go see the third. It has been so long since I saw the first one that I don’t even remember it that well. So, I guess tomorrows review of Shrek the Third will be based on what I think of it and not compared to how much better or worse it was than the first two.

Will you be heading out to the theater this weekend to catch Shrek the Third?

What New Movies Open on Friday, May 18th?

Eleven new movies open this Friday. Four open wide and seven in limited release.

Movie Opening Nationwide on Friday, May 18th:

Movie: Shrek the Third (PG) (Read Review)
Starring: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas
Genre: Animated Family Comedy
Synopsis: When the King of Far Far Away, Shrek’s father-in-law, suddenly passes away, it leaves Shrek as the next in line for the thrown. He doesn’t want to be King. First Thoughts: It looks funny, but I haven’t seen the second one and this is the only thing opening in my neck of the woods this weekend.

Movies in Limited Release this Week:

  • Brooklyn Rules – The story of three friends, one who wants to get out, one who likes the mobster life and one who just wants to work at his job and marry his girl. When a big time mobster takes note of the one who likes the mob, the other two get drawn into a life they want nothing to do with. Stars Alec Baldwin (TV’s 30 Rock), Scott Caan (Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve & Thirteen). It sounds very similar to the cancelled NBC TV show The Black Donnellys.
  • Even Money – The story of how gambling ruins lives. Stars Kim Basinger (The Sentinel, Cellular), Danny DeVito (TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadephia), Kelsey Grammar (TV’s Frasier), Ray Liota (Wild Hogs, Smokin’ Aces) and Forrest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland)
  • Fay Grim – The story of a woman who goes on a globetrotting journey looking for her dead husband’s journals. It is a sequel to Henry Fool. Stars Parker Posey (Superman Returns).
  • Once – It is a musical drama about a vacuum repairman who is also a street musician hoping for his big break. When he meets an immigrant woman that is a singer and aspiring songwriter, they team up and more than just great music starts to blossom.
  • Severance – A horror comedy about a group on the way to a team building meeting that starts getting knocked off one by one in the forest on their way there.
  • The Wendell Baker Story – Stars Luke (Vacancy, Idiocracy) and Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers). The story of an ex-con who vows to turn his life around upon release and meets a bunch of senior citizens that help him do so when he gets a job at their retirement home.

Not a one of these is playing anywhere near me, are they playing near you? It looks like it is all about the Shrek this weekend.
