What New Movies Come Out the Week of Friday, August 22nd?
This week there are seven new movies being released. One of them is opening everywhere today, Wednesday, August 20th. Four of them open wide on Friday, August 22nd. And, two are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, August 20th:
Movie: The Rocker (PG-13)
Starring: Rainn Wilson, Christina Applegate, Josh Gad, Teddy Geiger & Emma Stone
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A former ’80s hair band star has long seen that time pass since being kicked out of the band. When his teenage nephew’s band is in need of a drummer, he gets a second shot of being a music star.
First Thoughts: It’s Rainn Wilson (The Office) going over-the-top as a rocker, so how could you go wrong.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, August 22nd:
Movie: Cirque Du Soleil: Delirium (NR)
Starring: Cirque du Soleil
Genre: Theater
Synopsis: It is a multifaceted multimedia performance with urban tribal beats, great visuals, musicians, singers and dancers.
First Thoughts: If you like Cirque du Soleil, then you will probably like this.
Movie: Death Race (R)
Starring: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson & Natalie Martinez
Genre: Sci-Fi Action
Synopsis: A former racing champion and expert survivalist that has cleaned up his life after being sent to prison. He gets framed for a murder and sent back to prison and then is forced to drive in a race to the death by the warden. If you survive, you get out. The cars are all armored to the hilt.
First Thoughts: I don’t like movies with sub 90-minutes runtimes, but will probably be going to see this one anyway.
Movie: The House Bunny (PG-13)
Starring: Anna Faris, Colin Hanks, Emma Stone, Kat Dennings & Dana Min Goodman
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A Playboy bunny that gets kicked out of the mansion has to find somewhere to go and ends up on the steps of the Alpha Zeta sorority. She then has to try and help them attract more pledges and sets out to do so with the only thing she knows, fashion and makeup.
First Thoughts: What if the girl from Legally Blonde really was a moron living off only her looks? Well, if you go see this, it looks like you could find out with this one.
Movie: The Longshots (R)
Starring: Ice Cube, Keke Palmer, Tasha Smith, Jill Marie Jones, Dash Mihok & Miles Chandler
Genre: Sports Comedy
Synopsis: A former high school football star down on his luck gets his niece to be the quarterback of the local football team. He starts to get his groove back after becoming the coach of the team. The team goes on a run and the small town swells with pride.
First Thoughts: Looks like it could be fun for families and their young kids.
Movies in Limited Release:
- Hamlet 2 - Comedy about a failed actor who is trying to be a high school drama teacher and tries to rally his class by putting on a politically correct play.
- I.O.U.S.A. - Documentary about America’s coming economic crisis as the baby boomers start to retire.
Elegy continues expanding to more theaters this week.

What New Movies Come Out the Week of Friday, August 15th?
This week there are seven new movies being released. One of them is opening everywhere today, Wednesday, August 13th. Four of them open wide on Friday, August 15th. And, two are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, August 13th:
Movie: Tropic Thunder (R)
Starring: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey, Jr., Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, Danny R. McBride, Steve Coogan, Bill Hader & Nick Nolte
Genre: Action Comedy
Synopsis: A group of actors head to the jungle to film the biggest war movie ever, when fight breaks out for real and the pampered star of the show is taken captive. The other actors and crew must figure out how to save him.
First Thoughts: It looks funny in the previews, but I am hearing really bad things about this one. I try not to find out anything before I go see something myself, but it isn’t working on this one.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, August 15th:
Movie: Fly Me to the Moon 3-D (G)
Starring: Christopher Lloyd, Kelly Ripa, Nicollette Sheridan, Tim Curry & Trevor Gagnon
Genre: Animated Children’s Fantasy
Synopsis: Three flies hitch a ride on Apollo 11 in 1969. They are found out and put in a test tube by the astronauts, but are able to escape and just in time to save the mission from an electrical short.
First Thoughts: Sounds like a fun one for those with little ones.
Movie: Mirrors (R)
Starring: Kiefer Sutherland, Paula Patton, Amy Smart, Mary Beth Peil, Cameron Boyce, Erica Gluck, Julian Glover & John Shrapnel
Genre: Thriller
Synopsis: A former cop that is now working as a security guard at a store the once was destroyed by fire, finds the the mirrors in the store have a secret and put his family in danger.
First Thoughts: Don’t look in the mirror.
Movie: Star Wars: The Clone Wars (PG)
Starring: Matt Lanter, Ashley Eckstein, James Arnold Taylor, Dee Bradley Baker & Tom Kane
Genre: Animated Sci-Fi Action
Synopsis: The story takes place between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
First Thoughts: Look for video games and a new TV show revolving around the Clone Wars soon. It is between this and Henry Poole is Here.
Movie: Vicky Cristina Barcelona (R)
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Hall & Patricia Clarkson
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: Two American girls, one straight-laced and the other sexually promiscuous, travel to Spain for the summer. While there they meet an artist and his insane wife. Amorous entanglements ensue.
First Thoughts: Doesn’t really interest me in the least.
Movie in Limited Release:
- A Girl Cut in Two - Foreign flick about a French girl that is torn between to loves.
- Henry Poole is Here - Comedy drama about a guy that just wants to be alone. He moves into a small drab house. One day a neighbor discovers an oddly shaped stain in his stucco and believes it has miraculous powers. This brings out a lot of folks that want to experience it for themselves.
Bottle Shock and Elegy expands to more theaters this week after a limited opening last week.

This week there are six new movies being released. Two of them are opening everywhere on Wednesday, August 6th and four are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, August 6th:
Movie: Pineapple Express (R)
Starring: Seth Rogen, James Franco, Gary Cole, Rosie Perez & Danny R. McBride
Genre: Action Comedy
Synopsis: A dude drops his roach after witnessing a murder and then finds out that the rare strain of marijuana he was smoking could be traced back to the dealer and him. So, he and his dealer go on the run with the murdering drug lord and a crooked cop trying to track them down.
First Thoughts: Not sure about this one, but most likely will be seeing it on Friday. The situation may be kind of new, but the comedy seems to be pumping a well that has to be pretty dry by now.
Movie: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (PG-13)
Starring: Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, Blake Lively & Alexis Bledel
Genre: Comedy Drama
Synopsis: It is three years since the end of the events of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the four girls are embarking on their first year of college.
First Thoughts: Never saw the first one and probably won’t be seeing this one either anytime soon.
Movie in Limited Release:
- Beer for My Horses - Comedy about two lawmen in a small town that go after the bad guys that have kidnapped the girlfriend of one of them.
- Bottle Shock - Alan Richman (Die Hard) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day) star in this drama, based on a true story, about the happenings leading up to the famous “Judgment of Paris” wine tasting. Starts Wednesday, August 6th.
- Elegy - Penelope Cruz (Sahara), Ben Kingsley (You Kill Me), Dennis Hopper (Speed) and Patricia Clarkson (No Reservations) star in this drama about a professor that falls for his much younger student and she for him.
- Hell Ride - A bloody, sexy tale of motorcycle revenge presented by Quentin Tarantino.
