It’s feast or famine at you local theater recently. There’s either one movie or 10 starting each week it seems. This week, it’s the near latter, as there are eight movies opening, four everywhere and four others are in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, December 5th:

Movie: Cadillac Records (R)
Starring: Adrien Brody, Jeffrey Wright, Gabrielle Union, Columbus Short & Cedric the Entertainer
Genre: Musical Drama
Synopsis: The story of Leonard Chess and how he started his own recording company in 1950s Chicago and launched the careers of Etta James, Muddy Waters and many others.
First Thoughts: Great cast, could be really good.

Movie: Extreme Movie (R)
Starring: Michael Cera, Frankie Muniz, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard & Ryan Pinkston
Genre: Teen Sex Comedy
Synopsis: Spoof of teen sex comedies.
First Thoughts: This sounds extremely bad, but at least it only runs 75 minutes, so it’ll be over quickly. Also, all the movie sites say this opens on Friday, but none of them have any show times for it as yet.

Movie: Nobel Son (R)
Starring: Alan Rickman, Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen & Eliza Dushku
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Synopsis: A man going through a rough time lives with his very well educated parents. When his father is awarded the Nobel, he is kidnapped and they set the ransom at the $2 million prize that comes with the award. The father refuses and things go downhill from there, as lust, betrayal and revenge all come into play.
First Thoughts: Good cast, but that’s about it. Doesn’t really interest me.

Movie: Punisher: War Zone (R)
Starring: Ray Stevenson, Dominic West, Colin Salmon, Dash Mihok, Doug Hutchison & Wayne Knight
Genre: Comic-Book Action Thriller
Synopsis: Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, is back with his one-man war against organized crime. This time he is taking aim at mob boss Billy Russoti, who is left horribly disfigured after an encounter with Castle. So, he decides to start calling himself Jigsaw and seeks revenge on Castle.
First Thoughts: Never saw the last one, but I think I’ll be able to pick things up okay if I go see this.

Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, November 26th:

Movie: Australia (PG-13)
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown & Jack Thompson
Genre: War Adventure
Synopsis: An English aristocrat has inherited a giant ranch in Australia. English cattle barons try and drive her off the land, but she gets the help of a rough and tumble cattle driver to help her drive 2000 cattle across some of the most unforgiving land in the country. Once there, they still have to face bombings by Japanese forces that had just recently attacked Pearl Harbor.
First Thoughts: It is long and looks good, but it may be one that has to wait a while before I get to it.

Movie: Four Christmases (PG-13)
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen & Jon Voight
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: An unmarried couple has been avoiding the family centric holidays by retreating to some exotic location at Christmas, but when they find themselves unable to get a flight out due to fog, the end up having to spend time at four family get-togethers. He can’t wait to get away from all this, but she starts to think that having a family, even a crazy one, might be something she would like to do.
First Thoughts: It looks funny in the promos, but it runs only 82 minutes. That’s just sad. I mean, they couldn’t come up with more than 20 minutes a Christmas.

Movie: Transporter 3 (PG-13)
Starring: Jason Statham, Natalya Rudakova, François Berléand & Robert Knepper
Genre: Action Thriller
Synopsis: Frank Martin is back and he is being pressured into transporting the kidnapped daughter of the head of Ukraine’s EPA. During the trip, Frank falls for his passenger. Lots of car chases and fight scenes ensue.
First Thoughts: It’s probably not any good, but I still want to see it for some reason.

This Friday is sort of a lull before we get Quantum of Solace next week and Twilight the week after, at least to me it is anyway. So, what’s hitting theaters this week? There are nine movies opening, three everywhere and six others in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, November 7th:

Movie: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (PG)
Starring: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer & Andy Richter
Genre: Animated Family Comedy
Synopsis: The castaways have fixed the plane and are able to fly off the island, but only make it to the plains of Africa. They all come in contact with species of their own kind for the first time in the wild. Africa may be great, but is the Central Park Zoo actually where they want to be?
First Thoughts: If you like the previous, then you will probably like this one. Also available in IMAX.

Movie: Role Models (R)
Starring: Seann William Scott, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse & Bobb’e J. Thompson
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: Two guys trash one of their company’s trucks and get arrested. They can either go to jail or do 150 hours of community service. They choose the service. They end up as part of a mentorship program for kids. After lots of screw-ups, they finally do the right thing and try and help these kids.
First Thoughts: It’s probably not very good, but it is still the movie I am going to go see this weekend. The trailer actually does provide a few laughs, which is why I think the movie won’t be that good.

Movie: Soul Men (R)
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sharon Leal, Adam Herschman & Sean Hayes
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: Two former members of a band reunite to try and honor their old bandleader, but old problems come up while they do.
First Thoughts: It has Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, but I have heard and seen next to nothing about this one, which leads me to believe that the studio thinks is probably isn’t very good either.

I ended up seeing Appaloosa last week, as it had expanded to be showing in this area. Was disappointed, as it was nowhere near as good as advertised. Wish I had gone and saw Nick & Norah’s Infinite Play List like I was originally planning on.

Well, let’s take a look at what is playing this week. There are 14 movies hitting theaters, with four opening everywhere and 10 others in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, October 10th:

Movie: Body of Lies (R)
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Mark Strong, Golshifteh Farahani & Oscar Isaac
Synopsis: CIA operative thinks he has uncovered a major lead on a terrorist leader that may be operating out of Jordan. He comes up with a plan to get inside the terrorist network, but has to work with a veteran CIA agent and the head of Jordanian intelligence. He doesn’t know how much he can trust either of them. It is based on Washington Post columnist David Ignatius’ novel.
First Thoughts: It’s got DeCaprio and Crowe and political thrillers like these always interest me. It’s going to be a tough choice between this and The Express.

Movie: City of Ember (PG)
Starring: Bill Murray, Saoirse Ronan, Harry Treadaway, Tim Robbins & Martin Landau
Genre: Adventure Family Fantasy
Synopsis: The City of Ember has been powered by a powerful generator, but it is starting to fail. The once beautifully bright world may soon be no more. Two teenagers set out to find the answers to how this city came about and get the citizens out before it is too late.
First Thoughts: Doesn’t interest me, but if you’ve got kids, it may be worth checking out.

Movie: The Express (R)
Starring: Rob Brown, Dennis Quaid, Omar Benson Miller, Darrin Dewitt Henson & Charles S. Dutton
Genre: Biographical Sports Drama
His coach was Ben Schwartzwalder and under his tutelage, Davis became one of the best players on the team and surpassed the achievements of the great Jim Brown. He was the first black player to win a Heisman Trophy.
First Thoughts: Who doesn’t love a good sports movie? It is such a tough choice for me between this and Body of Lies.

Movie: Quarantine (R)
Starring: Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez, Johnathon Schaech, Jennifer Carpenter & Steve Harris
Genre: Horror
Synopsis: A reporter and her cameraman are following the night shift at a LA Fire Station. They head out on a call to an apartment building. Screams are coming from the building and the police are already on scene. It seems that someone living there has been infected by something. The residents are trying to escape along with the news crew, but they get trapped inside when the CDC quarantines the facility. They are cutoff from everything. There is no phones, power, TV, etc. When the quarantine is revoked, the only thing they find is the videotape left behind by the news crew.
First Thoughts: Horror movies are just not my thing, but even if they were, this one looks pretty dumb.

He won’t stand for it and keeps fighting for justice and for others like him. He refuses to back down or to compromise.
First Thoughts: This one sounds really good and I have always liked Lauren Graham (TV’s Gilmore Girls).

Movie: How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (R)
Starring: Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges, Danny Huston, Gillian Anderson & Megan Fox
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A big New York magazine hires a smalltime British celebrity journalist. He gets to enter high society as part of his job. He gets into all kinds of outrageous incidents. To keep his job, he needs to be more impressive and charming, but he totally annoys his colleagues and bumbles his way through events. Somehow, he catches the eye of a sexy young starlet and begins a friendship with a fellow writer. These two things may end up saving his career.
First Thoughts: Simon Pegg makes me laugh, but this looks stupid.

Movie: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (PG-13)
Starring: Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, Alexis Dziena, Ari Graynor, Aaron Yoo & Jay Baruchel
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A guy that frequents the indie rock scene, who has a broken heart and doesn’t play the bass that well, and a woman who is questioning everything she has always believed meet one night. They seem to have a very similar tastes in music, but little else, yet they set out together to find a secret show of a legendary rock band and while doing so, end up having what might be a great first date that leads to much change in their lives.
First Thoughts: I’m in the mood for a comedy this week and the other two look pretty bad, so this looks like the movie I am going to see tomorrow.
