Synopsis: Two college students are headed for spring break when they end up in a life and death struggle against John Ryder.

Review: This remake of the 1986 Rutger Hauer vehicle, this time with Sean Bean as John Ryder, the Hitcher, was your pretty standard horror suspense type thriller. It starts off like any other road movie with the happy couple heading off for spring break and quickly jumps into thriller mode on a dark and rainy New Mexico highway.

Unfortunately, every jump worthy moment of the movie has been given away in the trailer and advertisements for the film. So, if you’ve seen the trailer, you have already seen this movie. Only one moment, not totally given away in the trailer, may make you squirm, but more for the glimpse of grotesqueness than because it is actually scary.

We did learn a few things about what to do on a road trip:

  • Obviously, never pick up strangers.
  • When stalked by a psychotic madman always stop and make out with your girlfriend in the shower.
  • Lastly, don’t leave said girlfriend to go find a payphone.

If you like these types of movies you may find it more entertaining than I did. As for how it compares to the original, I don’t know, as I have not seen it. Overall, The Hitcher was a paint-by-numbers horror suspense thriller with an unsatisfying ending. My recommendation is to leave this one stranded on the side of the road.

Have you seen The Hitcher? What did you think of it? Is this one better or worst than the first? Leave your review in the comments.
