New Movie Releases for the Week of Friday, July 13th

Still not quite back to the regularity of Friday movie openings, but I will be glad when we do. There are seven new movies being released this week. Two open wide and five in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, July 11th:

Movie: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (PG-13) (Read Review)
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Michael Gambon, Ralph Fiennes & Gary Oldman
Genre: Fantasy Adventure
Synopsis: Harry Potter is back at Hogwarts for his fifth year and no one knows the truth of his dealings with Lord Voldemort. Professor Umbridge has been tapped to be the new teacher of the Defense against the Dark Arts, which leaves the students to pretty much teach themselves. Harry gets a group of students to begin training for what lies ahead.
First Thoughts: This is the best option this week, but I have yet to see the last three and don’t know if I will get the chance before Friday. We shall see. Also, it will be playing in some IMAX theaters.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, July 13th:

Movie: Captivity (R)
Starring: Elisha Cuthbert and a bunch of other actors
Genre: Horror Thriller
Synopsis: A serial killer terrorizes a fashion model and her chauffeur who are trapped in a small room. While trying to stay alive, they have to rely on each other and they end up falling for each other.
First Thoughts: I have heard of romantic comedies, but a romantic slasher flick?

Movies in Limited Release this Friday:

  • Drama/Mex – Three dramatic stories that intertwine and take place over the course of one night in Acapulco Mexico.
  • Interview – Siena Miller and Steve Buscemi star in this psychological drama about a political reporter who is sent to interview a vapid soap star.
  • My Best Friend – Comedy about a guy who is so busy he doesn’t have any friend until a colleague challenges him to produce one. He finds he actually doesn’t and can’t seem to make any, so he hires a likeable cab driver to show him the way to meet people and develop friends.
  • Shortcut to Happiness – A comedy with a big cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Anthony Hopkins, Kim Cattrall, Dan Aykroyd and Jennifer Love Hewitt as the devil. A man sells his soul for fame and fortune and in the end we all find out that there is no shortcut to happiness. Directed by good old Alan Smithee, so that should tell you something.
  • Talk to Me – Docudrama starring Don Cheadle as an ex-con who talks his way into a radio DJ gig in the 1960s.

The movies Introducing the Dwights and Rescue Dawn expand to more theaters this week.

For New Movie Friday there are two new movies to see this week. They are Captivity and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. What new movie will you be heading out to see this week?
