What New Movies Come Out Friday, October 17th?
Well, let’s take a look at what is playing this week. There are eight movies hitting theaters, with four opening everywhere and four others are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, October 17th:
Movie: Max Payne (R)
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Chris O’Donnell, Beau Bridges & Ludacris
Genre: Action Thriller
Synopsis: A cop that does things his own way ends up in a battle of supernatural proportions after heading into the dark underworld to find those responsible for killing his family and partner. Based on the video game.
First Thoughts: Hoping this turns out to be at least as good as Hitman from last year.
Movie: The Secret Life of Bees (PG-13)
Starring: Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, Alicia Keys & Paul Bettany
Genre: Period Coming-of-Age Drama
Synopsis: A 14-year-old girl haunted by the memories of her dead mother runs away with a friend to the small South Carolina town that may hold the key to her mother’s past. While there, three sisters that teach her about beekeeping and other things take her in.
First Thoughts: The best family option this weekend, unless you are really hankering for some talking dogs again.
Movie: Sex Drive (R)
Starring: Josh Zuckerman, Clark Duke, Amanda Crew, James Marsden & Seth Green
Genre: Teen Sex Comedy
Synopsis: An 18-year-old head cross country with two of his friends to lose his virginity to a hot girl he met online. The trip gets out of hand, but they learn lessons from all the misadventures. He takes his brother’s vintage Pontiac GTO to do so.
First Thoughts: Trying for another Superbad.
Movie: W. (PG-13)
Starring: Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Banks, James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn, Thandie Newton & Richard Dreyfuss
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: The story of George W. Bush as told by Oliver Stone.
First Thoughts: The clips look so over the top that I don’t really see myself seeing this anytime soon. Probably when it hits the premium cable outlets someday.
Movies in Limited Release:
- The Elephant King - A family drama about a woman that sends her young son to Thailand to bring back her older son to face charges in the US.
- Morning Light - Documentary about 15 young men and women who trained for six months to race in a big yacht race.
- Tru Loved - Comedy drama about a young woman with two mothers that moves to a small town and has to deal with homophobia.
- What Just Happened - Comedy starring Robert De Niro as a Hollywood guy that is over his head with two ex-wives and a movie project that isn’t going well.
For New Movie Friday there are six new movies to choose from this week. They are Max Payne, Morning Light, The Secret Life of Bees, Sex Drive, W., and What Just Happened. What new movie looks good to you this week?
What New Movies Start Playing Friday, June 13th?
On Friday we get five new movies arriving in a theater near you. Two are opening everywhere and three are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, June 13th:
Movie: The Happening (R)
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo, Ashlyn Sanchez & Betty Buckley
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Synopsis: There is no warning. It just happens. All of a sudden there are episodes of strange and chilling deaths all across the country in major cities. Philadelphia high school science teacher is trying to figure out a way to escape what is happening. He and his estranged wife and his math teacher friend and daughter head for the countryside. Yet, it seems that nowhere is safe from what is happening. Only after finding what may be behind this, is a small ray of hope found. Will they be able to escape what is happening?
First Thoughts: Does anybody really care that this is M. Night Shyamalan’s first Rated R movie. If that’s the best they can do to try and entice me into the theater, then I’ll just wait and maybe check it out down the road sometime.
Movie: The Incredible Hulk (PG-13) (Read Review)
Starring: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, Tim Blake Nelson & William Hurt
Genre: Comic-Book Sci-Fi Action
Synopsis: A scientist has been poisoned with gamma radiation that can turn him into The Hulk. He is searching for a cure. The military wants to capture him and figure out how to use this power of his. So, he lives in obscurity trying to evade capture, which leaves him separated from his former life and the woman he loves.
First Thoughts: This looks so much better than the last attempt at turning The Incredible Hulk into a movie franchise. Can’t wait to see it this Friday.
Movies in Limited Release:
- Baghead - Comedy about a guy wearing a bag on his head.
- Encounters at the End of the World - A visually dazzling look at life in the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation, which is home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer.
- My Winnipeg - An avant-garde biographical documentary about growing up in Winnipeg.
