There are six movies opening this week, three everywhere and three others are in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, March 27th:

Movie: 12 Rounds (PG-13)
Starring: John Cena, Steve Harris, Ashley Scott, Aidan Gillen & Brian J. White
Genre: Action Thriller
Synopsis: A brilliant thief gets thwarted during a heist by a New Orleans cop, but the thief’s girlfriend is accidentally killed in the incident. Wanting revenge, the thief escapes from prison and sets up an elaborate game that the cop must complete or the love of his life will be killed.
First Thoughts: John Cena has exactly shown himself to be the next Dwayne Johnson, but this is mildly interesting to me over the other new movie choices this week.

Movie: The Haunting in Connecticut (PG-13)
Starring: Virginia Madsen, Martin Donovan, Kyle Gallner & Elias Koteas
Genre: Supernatural Thriller
Synopsis: The story of a family that moves into a house in Connecticut that looks very nice, but turns out to have quite a disturbing history. It was once a funeral parlor and the son of the family that lived there then was a messenger for spiritual entities to pass between realms. That son returns to unleashed unspeakable horrors on the new family that just moved in.
First Thoughts: This is not my kind of movie, so the idea of it not looking very good to me is not all that surprising.

Movie: Monsters vs. Aliens (PG-13)
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland & Stephen Colbert
Genre: Sci-Fi Family Comedy
Synopsis: A bunch of monsters have been secreted away by the government, but when an alien attacks, the president is persuaded to use the monsters to defend themselves.
First Thoughts: This movie is available in regular, 3D, and IMAX 3D. I’ve heard it isn’t good in any of them. Plus, the Super Bowl commercial was really lame, especially 3D-wise.

Movies in Limited Release:

  • American Swing - Documentary about the swinging lifestyle in 1977.
  • The Education of Charlie Banks - A privileged Ivy leaguer has an old friend come to visit that has a violent past who ingratiates himself into his friend’s life.
  • Goodbye Solo - Foreign flick about a taxi driver that makes friends with a suicidal old man.

Sunshine Cleaning continues to expand to more theaters this week.

For New Movie Friday there are three new movies to choose from this week. They are 12 Rounds, The Haunting in Connecticut, and Monsters vs. Aliens. What new movie looks good to you this week?

What New Movies Come Out Thanksgiving Weekend 2008?

This week there are six movies opening, three everywhere and three others are in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, November 26th:

Movie: Australia (PG-13)
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, Bryan Brown & Jack Thompson
Genre: War Adventure
Synopsis: An English aristocrat has inherited a giant ranch in Australia. English cattle barons try and drive her off the land, but she gets the help of a rough and tumble cattle driver to help her drive 2000 cattle across some of the most unforgiving land in the country. Once there, they still have to face bombings by Japanese forces that had just recently attacked Pearl Harbor.
First Thoughts: It is long and looks good, but it may be one that has to wait a while before I get to it.

Movie: Four Christmases (PG-13)
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Mary Steenburgen & Jon Voight
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: An unmarried couple has been avoiding the family centric holidays by retreating to some exotic location at Christmas, but when they find themselves unable to get a flight out due to fog, the end up having to spend time at four family get-togethers. He can’t wait to get away from all this, but she starts to think that having a family, even a crazy one, might be something she would like to do.
First Thoughts: It looks funny in the promos, but it runs only 82 minutes. That’s just sad. I mean, they couldn’t come up with more than 20 minutes a Christmas.

Movie: Transporter 3 (PG-13)
Starring: Jason Statham, Natalya Rudakova, François Berléand & Robert Knepper
Genre: Action Thriller
Synopsis: Frank Martin is back and he is being pressured into transporting the kidnapped daughter of the head of Ukraine’s EPA. During the trip, Frank falls for his passenger. Lots of car chases and fight scenes ensue.
First Thoughts: It’s probably not any good, but I still want to see it for some reason.

Movies in Limited Release:

  • Milk - Biographical drama starring Sean Penn about the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office.
  • Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! - Foreign comedy about Lucky Singh, a con man that swindled the rich and powerful in Delhi.
