What New Movies Start Friday, May 7th, 2010?
There are seven movies opening this week. Two are opening everywhere and five more open on a limited basis.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, May 7th:
Movie: Babies (PG)
Starring: Four Babies
Genre: Documentary
Synopsis: The filmmaker follows four babies from different parts of the world from birth to them taking their first steps. They are in Mongolia, Namibia, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
First Thoughts: The babies all look cute, but I don’t think I’ll be seeing this anytime soon.
Movie: Iron Man 2 (PG-13)
Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke & Samuel L. Jackson
Genre: Sci-Fi Comic-Book Superhero Action
Synopsis: Everyone knows that the billionaire inventor Tony Stark is Iron Man. The government is pressuring him, along with the press and the public, to let the military in on his technology. Tony doesn’t want the information on his invention to get into the wrong hands, so he doesn’t want to do so. During this, he must make new alliances and fight off some powerful new foes.
First Thoughts: This is one of the movies I have most been looking forward to this year. Also, have been very interested to see how Don Cheadle taking over for Terrance Howard works. The movie is also playing in IMAX.

- Badmaash Company - Workplace comedy set in 1990s India.
- Casino Jack and the United States of Money - Biographical political crime story that revolved around Indian casinos, the U.S. Congress and a group of con men out to fleece the government.
- Happiness Runs - Period drama about a young man that comes to the conclusion the the utopian ideals of the communion he grew up in aren’t all they are cracked up to be.
- Mother and Child - Ensemble drama starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L. Jackson, and others about three different women and how adoption has affected their lives.
- Multiple Sarcasms - Comedy drama starring Timothy Hutton, Mira Sorvino, Stockard Channing, Dana Delany, India Ennenga, and Mario Van Peebles about a man that decides to shed his life of convention by writing a play.

What New Movies Start Friday, April 24th, 2009?
There are 10 movies opening this week. Four are opening everywhere and six more open on a limited basis.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, April 24th:
Movie: earth (G)
Starring: James Earl Jones
Genre: Nature
Synopsis: This is the first film in the Disneynature series and is narrated by Jones. It focuses on three animal families and their journeys around the planet. Some of the wildest and most elusive creatures are shown in unbelievable locations.
First Thoughts: This looks like it has some amazing video of some very beautiful places on this wonderful planet of ours.
Movie: Fighting (R)
Starring: Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard, Brian J. White, Luis Guzman & Zulay Henao
Genre: Action Drama
Synopsis: The story of a guy from a small town that came to New York City with little. A scam artist finds him and his fighting ability to be a way to make some money. The both struggle to find respect and survive in the streetfighting arena, where the rich come to bet.
First Thoughts: This looks like one of those movies you catch on HBO or something some weekend when there is nothing else on.
Movie: Obsessed (PG-13)
Starring: Idris Elba, Beyoncé Knowles, Ali Larter, Bruce McGill & Jerry O’Connell
Genre: Thriller
Synopsis: A guy that just got a big promotion has everything going for him in his career and in his marriage. Then a new temp at his work begins to stalk him and everything starts to go bad.
First Thoughts: This looks lame and just an excuse for Ali Larter to walk around sporting very little clothing.
Movie: The Soloist (PG-13)
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey, Jr., Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander & Lisa Gay Hamilton
Genre: Biographical Drama
Synopsis: The story of a musical prodigy that dropped out of Julliard because of his developing schizophrenia and ended up homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. A journalist finds out about him and tries to help him find a way back. They develop a friendship that changes things for both of them.
First Thoughts: This looks really good and the cast is great, but since it was postponed from the end of last year, I’m a bit worried about it. Hopefully, it turns out to be as good as it looks from the ads.
Movies in Limited Release:
- The Garder - A look at the famous political and social battle over the largest community garden in the U.S (located in south central Los Angeles).
- Il Divo - Political drama about corruption and chaos at the highest level of politics.
- The Informers - Period showbiz drama starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Amber Heard and Mickey Rourke.
- Is Anybody There? - Period comedy drama about a young boy living with his parents at a retirement home they run.
- Mutant Chronicles - Sci-fi actioner starring Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki, and John Malkovich.
- Tyson - Biographical documentary about former boxing champ Mike Tyson.

Movie Review: Iron Man - Starring Robert Downey Jr. & Gwyneth Paltrow

Rating: Worth a Full Price Ticket
Synopsis: A billionaire industrialist, who is a genius inventor and notorious playboy, is captured in Afghanistan after demonstrating his company’s latest weaponry. A fellow captive saves his life. Together, instead of building the weapons their captures want; they set out to build a powered suit of armor to aid their escape. During the escape his, now friend, and fellow captive is killed. He returns home a changed man, who wants to change his ways. He starts working on a new and improved version of the suit, so he can protect people.
Review: Iron Man is one of the best movies in the comic book genre. It ranks up there with Spider-Man and Batman Begins. It gives another great example of what can and should be done when turning comic books into movies. But, it isn’t just that, it is also a really good movie in general.
Iron Man does the main thing that should be accomplished, in the first of a possible comic hero franchise, it tells you the origin story, in detail. No five-minute overviews or voiceovers, etc., so you can get right to the action. You get to see how Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. (Zodiac, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), becomes Iron Man. This is the reason why I liked Spider-Man
Jon Favreau (Zathura, Elf), he also appears in the film as Stark’s driver Hogan, opens the film with a bang and then flashes back and takes you through the events leading up to his capture. This grabs your attention and then allows you to get to know the Stark character before his capture. You then see his captivity, first suit creation and escape. The escape being the next time there is any action. Yet, you never lose interest. The bulk of the action is in the second half of the film.
Next, you follow his building of the Version 2.0 prototype. This is filled with a lot of slapstick type comedy, as he perfects his suit, things don’t always go well. This section is a whole lot of fun. It provides a great comic interlude between the seriousness of his captivity and his using the suit in battle for the first time. There is actually a lot of comedy throughout the whole film.
As someone that new nothing about the Iron Man comic characters going in, I really enjoyed the movie. Iron Man is worth a full price ticket and makes for a great start to the summer movie season, even if it is still spring. Oh, and don’t be in such a hurry to get out of the theater before the credits finish, as everyone else I saw it with was, if you want to see Samuel L. Jackson (Jumper, Coach Carter) as Nick Fury, the Director of S.H.E.I.L.D., talk to Stark about the “Avenger Initiative.”

This week, there are six new movies hitting the big screen. Two are opening everywhere and four are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, May 2nd:
Movie: Iron Man (PG-13) (Read Review)
Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Jeff Bridges, Terrence Howard & Gwyneth Paltrow
Genre: Comic Book Sci-Fi Action
Synopsis: A billionaire industrialist and genius inventor gets captured and builds a suit of armor to escape and then once back home, goes about building a better version of it, so he can protect people.
First Thoughts: Don’t know much about this comic book hero, other than he seems to resemble Batman in many ways. This is the first big budget blockbuster of the season and I can’t wait to watch it this Friday.
Movie: Made of Honor (PG-13)
Starring: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin McKidd & Sydney Pollack
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Synopsis: A very successful guy that has no trouble with the ladies finds that his life is just not the same when his best friend leaves for six weeks. She comes back engaged to a well-to-do Scotsman. While she was gone, he realized that she was the girl for him and is shocked to learn the news of her pending marriage when she returns and more so, when she asks him to be her “maid” of honor. He decides to do so, only because from the inside, he thinks he can make her see that he is the guy for her.
First Thoughts: Looks to be decent counter programming for those not up for a comic book actioner this weekend.
Movies in Limited Release:
- Fugitive Pieces – Psychological drama about a boy that saw his family killed by the Nazis and then was smuggled out of the country and eventually ended up a poet and translator in Canada.
- Mister Lonely – Psychological drama about a Michael Jackson impersonator that meets Marilyn Monroe and moves in with her and Charlie Chaplin and their daughter Shirley Temple.
- Redbelt – Tim Allen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Mortimer, Alice Braga, and Joe Mantegna star in this action sports drama about martial artists that deplores competitions, but after saving a famous action star, he gets ushered into the industry and ends up in a prize fight.
- Son of Rambow – Coming of age comedy about two young friends in 1980s England set out to make a homemade movie that recreates Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo: First Blood.
