What New Movies Start Friday, May 14th, 2010?

There are six movies opening this week. Three are opening everywhere and three more open on a limited basis.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, May 14th:

Movie: Just Wright (PG)
Starring: Common, Queen Latifah, Paula Patton, Phylicia Rashad & Pam Grier
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Synopsis: A physical therapist gets a great job working with an NBA All-Star, but when she starts to fall for him it makes things tough. Especially, since he seems to be into her best friend.
First Thoughts: Interesting place to put a romantic comedy. But, other than that, it sounds like every other romantic comedy that has come before it.

Movie: Letters to Juliet (PG)
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Vanessa Redgrave, Chris Egan, Gael & García Bernal
Genre: Romance
Synopsis: A young woman from America joins a group that replies to letters left to the famous Juliet of Romeo and Juliet. She answers one that she finds that was left in 1957 and it inspires the woman to head for Italy to find her long lost love, which begins a string of events that may just bring love into both their lives.
First Thoughts: Chick flick.

Movie: Robin Hood (PG-13)
Starring: Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max von Sydow & William Hurt
Genre: Adventure
Synopsis: Robin and his followers, in 13th century England, fight against local corruption and end up beginning an uprising that could change the balance of power in the world.
First Thoughts: This definitely looks different than any other Robin Hood movie that has come before. It does kind of look like Gladiator though.

Movies in Limited Release:

  • Daddy Longlegs - Comedy drama about an irresponsible divorce dad that spends a couple weeks with his two young sons.
  • Looking for Eric - Fantasy sports comedy drama about a depressed postal worker that gets some help from his favorite Manchester United player.
  • Princess Kaiulani - Foreign drama about a Hawaiian princess in 1888 and the life she led after being separated from her family at 13 when they were ousted from power.

For New Movie Friday there are four new movies to choose from this week. They are Just Wright, Letter to Juliet, Princess Kaiulani, and Robin Hood. Do any of this week’s new movies look good to you?

Opening Nationwide on Friday, April 17th:

Movie: 17 Again (PG-13)
Starring: Zac Efron, Leslie Mann, Thomas Lennon, Matthew Perry & Tyler Steelman
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A guy with a failed marriage, kids that don’t like him, and a lousy job gets a chance to try and fix things when he is transformed back into a 17-year-old. Things don’t go the way he would’ve hoped.
First Thoughts: Didn’t this star Kirk Cameron and Dudley Moore the last time?

Movie: Crank: High Voltage (R)
Starring: Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Clifton Collins, Jr., Efren Ramirez, Bai Ling & Dwight Yoakam
Genre: Action
Synopsis: A guy has had his heart stolen, not by a pretty girl, but by a Chinese mobster. His replacement is battery powered and needs to be jolted regularly with electricity or he will die.
First Thoughts: Never saw the first one and really surprised they made a second one. When will someone put Statham in a really good action role?

Movie: State of Play (PG-13)
Starring: Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Jason Bateman & Jeff Daniels
Genre: Political Thriller
Synopsis: A reporter and a congressman are entangled in the brutal murder or the congressman’s assistant. She also happens to be his mistress. He is the rising star in his party and looks to be the next in line for the presidency until secrets thought to have been buried start coming to the surface. The reporter is working on a story that could bring down many of the nation’s biggest political and business leaders.
First Thoughts: This has one heck of a cast. It looks by far to be the best new option this weekend.

Movies in Limited Release:

  • American Violet - The story of a woman facing a conviction for being a drug dealer based on faulty evidence that is based on true events.
  • Gooby - Family movie about a kid that is scared to move into his new house and has his wish of someone to help him come true. It just happens to be a six-foot tall monster that may be more afraid of the world than he is.
  • Sleep Dealer - The psychological sci-fi story that takes place in Mexico in the near future about a guy that is forced to leave his small town and what he finds as he starts heading north.

For New Movie Friday there are three new movies to choose from this week. They are 17 Again, Crank: High Voltage, and State of Play. What new movie looks good to you this week?
