What Are My New Movie Choices for the First Friday of the Year?

The first Friday is quickly approaching in my quest to see a newly released movie each week for the year. There are a lot of movies that come out this year that I am looking forward to this year like Spider-Man 3, National Treasure 2, Live Free or Die Hard, Transformers and many more. But what do I have to choose from this week? What new movies hit theatres this Friday, January 5th?

According to Fandango there are four new movies premiering this week at a theatre near me:

Movie: Code Name: The Cleaner (PG-13)
Starring: Cedric the Entertainer, Lucy Liu and Nicollette Sheridan
Genre: Action Comedy
Synopsis: Jake (Cedric the Entertainer) looks to be just a regular guy but he has no idea who he is after he gets hit on the head by an unknown attacker. Then he gets mixed up in a high-level government conspiracy leaving him and those looking for him to start thinking he might actually be an undercover agent who may have information regarding a secret arms deal that involves the CIA and FBI.
First Thoughts: Having seen the commercials and the trailer it looks funny. Hopefully all the jokes aren’t in the trailer.

Movie: Freedom Writers (PG-13)
Starring: Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey and Scott Glenn
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: A teacher (Hilary Swank) in a racially divided area of Los Angeles is put in charge of a class that the system says is not able to learn. She takes this class and inspires them to think about their futures and make a plan for what they want it to look like. She gives them materials to read that they can relate to and encourages them to start journals to record their daily lives and thoughts. Based on a true story of teacher Erin Gruwell.
First Thoughts: It looks like a movie in the vein of Dead Poets Society, Coach Carter, Dangerous Minds and The Emperor’s Club.

Movie: Happily N’Ever After (PG)
Starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze, Jr. and Sigourney Weaver
Genre: Animated Family Comedy Fantasy
Synopsis: A fairy tale land where things don’t work out, as they should. In this place Cinderella’s wicked stepmother (Sigourney Weaver) has gather other villains to turn the tables and make evil rein supreme. Cinderella (Sarah Michelle Gellar) leads the resistance movement to put order back in Fairy Tail Land.
First Thoughts: Not big on the animated movie myself but if you have kids it probably is a good choice.

Movie: Thr3e
Starring: Nobody I have ever heard of
Genre: Suspense Thriller
Synopsis: A seminary student is the target of a serial killer who tries to get help from a police psychologist. Since the psychologist brother was one of the killer’s previous victims there is a deep interest in find him. They team up to figure out the clues and find the killer before he kills another. The movie is based on a Ted Dekker novel.
First Thoughts: There is no trailer to be viewed so I can only go on the short synopsis so who knows.

A couple of other movies will be opening this week, as well, but not in a theatre near me. They are The Breed starring Michelle Rodriguez and Oliver Hudson and Virgin Territory starring Hayden Christensen and Mischa Barton. So, that leaves me with four movies to choose from this Friday. Come back tomorrow to see what movie I have selected to be the first of 52. What movie would you go see given the choices above?
