in New Movies This Friday

This Friday there are five new movies being released. Two of them are opening everywhere and three are in limited release.

Opening Nationwide on Friday, August 1st:

Movie: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (PG-13)
Starring: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, Luke Ford & Michelle Yeoh
Genre: Fantasy Adventure Comedy
Synopsis: A mummy that is awoken from a 2000 year old curse is threatening to takeover the world. He was doomed to spend eternity in suspended animation and now that he is reanimated, he is pissed. He was awoken by a young adventurer and archaeologist, but was tricked into to doing so. He must call upon his parents for help, cause his dad has some experience in dealing with those that should have been left in eternal slumber.
First Thoughts: Not sure we needed a third one of these, but it won’t stop me from going to see this one on Friday.

Movie: Swing Vote (PG-13)
Starring: Kevin Costner, Madeline Carroll, Paula Patton, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci & George Lopez
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A guy that likes drinking beer and not much else is has watched while his life has pasted him by. His one great accomplishment is his 12-year-old daughter. She is quite bright, but also a bit mischievous. She is the one that really takes care of things, but one day she accidentally begins a chain of events that results in her father being the only one left to break the tie of the presidential election.
First Thoughts: This has a big cast of well known and very funny people, but it really has the markings of something that will be rented or watched on one of the premium cablers sometime down the road.

Movie in Limited Release:

  • Frozen River – Family drama about a guy that leaves his wife having gambled away all their money who ends up helping another woman smuggling illegals into the States to try and make ends meet.
  • In Search of a Midnight Kiss – Romantic comedy about a failed writer that puts out a personal ad and the blind date that results from it.
  • The Midnight Meat Train – Bradley Cooper (TV’s Alias), Leslie Bibb (TV’s Crossing Jordan) and Brooke Shields (TV’s Lipstick Jungle) star in this psychological horror thriller about a serial killer they preys on late night commuters and an artist that is fascinated by him.
