There are eight new movies coming out Friday. Four open nationwide and another four open on a limited basis.
Nationwide – New Movies Coming Out Friday, February 10th:
Movie: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (PG)
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Luis Guzman & Vanessa Hudgens
Genre: Adventure
Synopsis: A teen boy gets a distress signal from an island that doesn’t actually appear to exist. His stepfather decides to accompany the boy on the journey to locate the person sending the signal. They contract a helicopter pilot and his daughter to fly them out to the coordinates and adventure ensues.
First Thoughts: Never saw the first one, probably won’t be seeing this one anytime soon. It is also being released in 3-D and IMAX 3-D.
Movie: Safe House (R)
Starring: Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Brendan Gleeson & Sam Shepard
Genre: Action Thriller
Synopsis: An agent that spends his time at a small post in Cape Town wishes he could get out in the field and become a full-fledged agent. When one of the most dangerous and wanted men around is brought to the safe house things go horribly wrong, as the place is attacked. They barely escape and must work together to figure out what is going on and who is behind it.
First Thoughts: Denzel is pretty fantastic in everything he does on screen, but he really pops when he takes on the bad guy persona. I can’t wait to see this one.
Movie: Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3D (PG)
Starring: Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor & Natalie Portman
Genre: Sci-Fi Action Adventure
Synopsis: When the Trade Federation cuts off all the routes leading to Naboo, a young Jedi apprentice and his tutor are sent to settle the problem.
First Thoughts: While I don’t hate the prequel trilogy quite as much as many, except for the fact that if you watch them before the original trilogy they ruin many of the things that made those awesome, I mostly likely will not be plunking down any money to see this again in 3-D. I would however go see the original trilogy (if it still existed) on the big screen, even if it got the 3-D treatment.
Movie: The Vow (PG-13)
Starring: Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Jessica Lange, Sam Neill, Wendy Crewson & Scott Speedman
Genre: Romance Drama
Synopsis: Couple that hasn’t been married long get into a car accident and the wife ends up in a coma. When she finally wakes, she has no memory of her husband. He sets out to win her heart once again.
First Thoughts: Chick flick lover unite! I will likely not be one of them anytime soon. Still have never seen The Notebook, although I do really like McAdams. Although, might be interesting to see if the usually very wooden Tatum can convey any emotion, let alone the type need for a role like this.
Limited – New Movies That Come Out Friday, February 10th:
- Chico & Rita – Animated romance drama about a young piano player with dreams of making big and a singer with an extraordinary voice in 1948 Cuba.
- Perfect Sense – Romance drama starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green about a chef and a scientist that fall in love during a plague that takes away the senses.
- Return – Drama about a soldier back from duty that is finding it hard to get back to her regular life with her husband, kids and friends.
- The Turin Horse – Drama.
