Six new movies open Friday. Two are opening nationwide, one is opening on IMAX and three are in limited release. Plus, you’ll find that Young Adult is expanding to more theaters this weekend.
Nationwide – Movies That Open Friday, December 16th:
Movie: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (G)
Starring: Jason Lee, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris, Christina Applegate, David Cross, Jenny Slate & Alan Tudyk
Genre: Animated Family Comedy
Synopsis: Dave, the Chipmunks and the Chipettes are off on a luxury cruise, but things go wrong and the six Chips end up on a deserted island that turns out to be not all that deserted. Dave sets out to find them.
First Thoughts: Have yet to see either of the first two, so will not likely be seeing this one anytime soon. But, those I know with little ones always seem to enjoy it. Well, the little ones do, maybe not so much their parents and grandparents.
Movie: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (PG-13)
Starring: Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace & Rachel McAdams
Genre: Action Mystery Thriller
Synopsis: It looks like the crown prince of Austria has committed suicide, but Holmes believes it was murder. He also thinks that it is just one small piece of a larger game designed by the evil genius Moriarty. Holmes and Watson, along with a gypsy, race across Europe in an attempt to stop him before his evil plot can take place.
First Thoughts: I’ve been looking forward to this one ever since it was first announced and nothing I have seen thus far has dampened that outlook.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is opening on Friday, December 16th in some IMAX theaters and a few regular theaters as well, but doesn’t fully open until next Wednesday, December 21st, when you’ll find it everywhere.
Limited – New Movies Opening Friday, December 16th, 2011:
- Carnage – Comedy drama starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly about the parents of two boys that get into a fight at school trying to workout the problem, but finding that things get out of hand for them as well.
- Cook County – Drama about three generations of meth addicts living in the piney woods of East Texas.
- Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel – Documentary about Roger Corman’s contributions to film over the last 60 years.
