This week there are seven new movies being released. One of them is opening everywhere today, Wednesday, August 20th. Four of them open wide on Friday, August 22nd. And, two are in limited release.
Opening Nationwide on Wednesday, August 20th:
Movie: The Rocker (PG-13)
Starring: Rainn Wilson, Christina Applegate, Josh Gad, Teddy Geiger & Emma Stone
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A former ’80s hair band star has long seen that time pass since being kicked out of the band. When his teenage nephew’s band is in need of a drummer, he gets a second shot of being a music star.
First Thoughts: It’s Rainn Wilson (The Office) going over-the-top as a rocker, so how could you go wrong.
Opening Nationwide on Friday, August 22nd:
Movie: Cirque Du Soleil: Delirium (NR)
Starring: Cirque du Soleil
Genre: Theater
Synopsis: It is a multifaceted multimedia performance with urban tribal beats, great visuals, musicians, singers and dancers.
First Thoughts: If you like Cirque du Soleil, then you will probably like this.
Movie: Death Race (R)
Starring: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Ian McShane, Tyrese Gibson & Natalie Martinez
Genre: Sci-Fi Action
Synopsis: A former racing champion and expert survivalist that has cleaned up his life after being sent to prison. He gets framed for a murder and sent back to prison and then is forced to drive in a race to the death by the warden. If you survive, you get out. The cars are all armored to the hilt.
First Thoughts: I don’t like movies with sub 90-minutes runtimes, but will probably be going to see this one anyway.
Movie: The House Bunny (PG-13)
Starring: Anna Faris, Colin Hanks, Emma Stone, Kat Dennings & Dana Min Goodman
Genre: Comedy
Synopsis: A Playboy bunny that gets kicked out of the mansion has to find somewhere to go and ends up on the steps of the Alpha Zeta sorority. She then has to try and help them attract more pledges and sets out to do so with the only thing she knows, fashion and makeup.
First Thoughts: What if the girl from Legally Blonde really was a moron living off only her looks? Well, if you go see this, it looks like you could find out with this one.
Movie: The Longshots (R)
Starring: Ice Cube, Keke Palmer, Tasha Smith, Jill Marie Jones, Dash Mihok & Miles Chandler
Genre: Sports Comedy
Synopsis: A former high school football star down on his luck gets his niece to be the quarterback of the local football team. He starts to get his groove back after becoming the coach of the team. The team goes on a run and the small town swells with pride.
First Thoughts: Looks like it could be fun for families and their young kids.
Movies in Limited Release:
- Hamlet 2 – Comedy about a failed actor who is trying to be a high school drama teacher and tries to rally his class by putting on a politically correct play.
- I.O.U.S.A. – Documentary about America’s coming economic crisis as the baby boomers start to retire.
Elegy continues expanding to more theaters this week.
For New Movie Friday there are six new movies to choose from this week. They are Cirque Du Soleil: Delirium, Death Race, Hamlet 2, The House Bunny, The Longshots, and The Rocker. What new movie looks good to you this week?
After a few weeks of solid new releases, this weekend unfortunately has none. Rainn Wilson’s The Rocker looks terrible, though I’d watch that anyday over Fred Durst’s The Longshots or The House Bunny. And as for Death Race, there is no way that movie can be any good.
